The Story Behind

At the time of commissioning in 1973, Mungania Tea Factory was involved in manufacturing of green tea, managed by a Japanese company by the name Kenya Maruzen.

The factory was closed and handed over in 1979 and ownership transferred to the then Kenya Tea Development Authority. The factory was later re-opened in 1980 for manufacture of Black CTC Teas at an annual installed processing capacity of ten million (10,000,000) Kgs green leaf. It was first expanded in 2014 with an additional processing capacity of five million (5,000,000) Kgs. Currently, the Factory has a processing capacity of 20 million Kgs green leaf.

Location

MunganiaTea factory falls within KTDA administrative Region 3 and is located at Kagaari North Location, Embu East Sub-County of Embu County, in formerly Eastern province, Kenya. It is situated 20Km from Embu town and 152Km from Nairobi; It is on Latitude -0.39657; Longitude 37.50291 and is 1830M above Sea Level.

The Factory’s catchment area has a total of 12,500 registered growers with a total of 1768.72 Ha under tea giving an average farm size of 0.15-Ha. The catchment has potential for higher production per unit area if improvement is done on crop husbandry

Governance and Management

The Company is under KTDA Management Services and is governed by a Factory Board comprising of 6 Directors elected by shareholders from six (6) electoral areas. In the Factory Board, is the director representing Zone 6 at the KTDA (H) Board.
